First established in 1997, Turrets is now the in-house youth theatre company of The Witham community arts centre, providing access to drama-based workshops and activities for young people in Barnard Castle and the surrounding area.

Working with children from the age of 7+, Turrets is committed to delivering unique performance opportunities, providing formative creative experiences over 20 years for hundreds of young people across the region. With many alumni now pursuing careers in theatre and the wider arts, we pride ourselves on being a launch pad for creativity; providing a safe and supportive environment in which to build confidence, experience and attitude!

Through devised and scripted work, both groups work to develop imaginative and original performances, equipping members with invaluable experiences both on and off stage, and helping to bridge the gaps between primary and secondary school, when support and familiarity are invaluable.

Juniors (4 pm – 5:30 pm)
Open to ages 7 – 11 years, The Juniors act as an introduction to all things theatre, and provides a nurturing and safe environment in which to explore the world. Our weekly workshops are full of fun and games, building confidence and trust amongst the group – core skills in life as well as on the stage.

Seniors (5:45 pm – 7:15 pm)
Open to ages 12+ years, The Seniors develop key acting skills based around improvisation, drama games and script work. The group explore different methods and techniques with guest facilitators and masterclasses, as well as through focussed rehearsals and productions.

SPRING TERM
Workshops start Wednesday 6th January
Date: Wednesdays during term time
Time: Juniors 4 pm – 5:30 pm / Seniors 5:45 pm – 7:15 pm

Having adapted to the necessary social distancing protocols in our workshop space, the Turrets facilitator team and The Witham are doing everything we can to ensure a safe, spaced and fun environment for our groups to work in.

The Juniors will be starting work on bringing to life a script that has been developed over the Autumn Term, that explores their experiences of lockdown, and the magic that can occur when you really reach the limits of boredom! A wild adventure awaits for our cast – so stay tuned for an announcement of performance dates as/when allowed.

The Senior group spent the Autumn Term teasing apart the issues that young people face today, getting to grips with the world that surrounds them and making plans in the hope of building a better future together. The Spring Term will be spent starting to devise and create a piece of theatre that brings these issues to the eyes and ears of the wider world.

Price: £60/child (Jan – Mar 21)
