Caroline Hardie and Niall Hammond, from the Friends of the Stockton & Darlington Railway will discuss how the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway, 200 years ago this year, changed the world. This celebratory talk will look at the world’s first instance of overcrowding on a train, the start of business commuting, the invention of the railway station and how a national pandemic and a lockdown slowed the development of the railway between 1831-2. They will also talk about the work of the Friends of the S&DR over the last decade and what the next leg of the journey is going to look like after 2025.
