Elegant. Expansive. Criminally underplayed. Louis Spohr’s Nonet in F major doesn’t turn up on concert programmes all that often – which is a shame, because it’s a proper treat. Written for nine players (winds and strings together), it’s chamber music on a grander scale: full of lush textures, lyrical tunes, and playful twists. Think of it as sitting somewhere between Mozart’s charm and Brahms’s richness – with plenty of Spohr’s own flair thrown in. It dances, it sings, and every instrument gets its moment in the spotlight. Not flashy, not fussy, just quietly brilliant, especially in the hands of Royal Northern Sinfonia.

Running time: 75minutes no interval.
