What can you see? What can you hear? What can we discover about the unique landscape and flora of Upper Teesdale?
Fabulous Flora! is an arts and environmental exhibition by students from four Teesdale Primary Schools working alongside County Durham based artists David De La Haye, Louise Taylor and Nat Wilkins. The exhibition is inspired by the rare flora of Upper Teesdale and encourages us to consider this special landscape in different ways.
As part of Northern Heartlands’ Budding Botanists project, students from Bowes-Hutchinson’s C of E Primary School, Cotherstone Primary School, Montalbo Nursery and Primary School and St Mary’s RC Primary School discovered the rare flowers of Upper Teesdale during visits to Cow Green Reservoir. They were accompanied by volunteers from the Teesdale Special Flora Trust, including Dr Margaret Bradshaw, who inspired the groups involved.
The artists facilitated creative activities on site to encourage the students to look, listen and experience their environment in new ways. During in-school workshops students developed their own artistic response creating photographs, cyanotype prints, and zines, as well as developing their own sound compositions using recordings taken at Cow Green Reservoir.
We invite you to experience the exhibition and learn more about the special flora of Upper Teesdale. You can also create your own ‘zine’ mini magazine inspired by the Teesdale Special Flora, just follow the instructions provided.
Thank you to all partners involved and everyone who supported this project.
