Jenny Sturgeon & MG Boulter

Jenny Sturgeon and M G Boulter have been pen pals since 2021, maintaining the ebb and flow of a musical conversation between their respective homes on Shetland and Southend-on-Sea, Essex. Both established songwriters in their own right they cemented their collaboration through the Shetland Song-writing Festival, where they were both tutors in 2022, as well as sharing mutual musical friends and becoming label mates on the indie folk label, Hudson Records.

Those catch-ups, held online across months and years, led to the quiet creation of a collection of songs which will be released in 2026. The songs reflect the topics that naturally came up in their conversations, from meditations on travel (‘Holding Patterns’) and family (‘Jason’) to idle talk about trips taken and wonders seen (‘Flint Knapped’).

In between touring, recording and their daily lives, the songs were pieced together from melodies rushed onto voice memos or fragments of lyrics emailed to each other for revision and tinkering. The songs are the culmination of all this work in the moments between the busyness, when two songwriters had time to sit and see what they could make of the world.
