The Witham – Website Development Tender Brief (1)

The Witham is inviting tenders from experienced digital partners to design and build a new website for our arts and community venue in Barnard Castle

We’re looking for a partner who understands not just web development, but the needs of cultural organisations and their audiences.

A key part of the project will be strong integration with Spektrix, alongside creating an accessible, engaging and easy to manage website that supports The Witham’s future development.

Deadline for submissions: Midnight 21 August 2026

Artists Wanted!

We’re looking for 10 artists to take part in Art in Action, a live painting event at The Witham on Saturday 5 September.

Taking inspiration from the theme ‘Grassroots’, artists will have four hours, from 12pm–4pm, to create a piece live as visitors watch the work take shape.

Please note that participation is unpaid; however, artists will have the opportunity to sell their finished work through a silent auction taking place the following week.

Interested in getting involved? We’d love to hear from you. Please email [email protected] before 30th August for more information.

Witham Welcomer

We’re looking for friendly volunteers to join us as Witham Welcomers, helping greet visitors and create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. As a Witham Welcomer, you will be at the forefront of our visitor experience. Your main responsibility is to meet and greet visitors and building users, ensuring they feel welcomed, informed and supported throughout their visit.

If you enjoy meeting people, we’d love to hear from you.
Email [email protected] or call 01833 631107 to find out more about the position, and to arrange an informal, in-person chat.

Volunteer Maintenance Assistant

The Witham is at the heart of our community, providing a welcoming space for everyone. We’re looking for practical, hands-on volunteers who enjoy tackling a variety of small maintenance and repair jobs to help keep our historic buildings and public spaces running smoothly and looking their best.
No two days are the same, but general maintenance and repair tasks could include: painting and decorating, moving and assembling furniture, working at hight, and anything else which may help us care for our historic buildings and facilities.
This is a flexible role that can fit around your availability – whether you can spare a few hours each month, or would like to come in more regularly. If you’re a handy person who enjoys fixing and maintaining things, we’d love to hear from you.

Email [email protected] or call 01833 631107 to find out more about the position, and to arrange an informal, in-person chat.

New Trustees
Would you like to play your part in ensuring the long-term survival of The Witham?

The Witham is the main provider of a cultural programme in Barnard Castle and Teesdale with more than 15,000 tickets sold, and 6000 attendances at regular activities each year. The current Board of Trustees has worked tirelessly to dispel the myth that culture is limited to just part of the population and has been passionate about increasing inclusion through an emphasis on having ‘something for everyone‘ on offer at The Witham.

The Witham is the only independent arts centre in the county. Part of the Board’s responsibility is to guide the Centre Director and her very small team of staff to grow our audiences, enhance our commerciality, appreciate our essential dependency on volunteers and seek additional funding year-on- year so that we can minimise our costs, engage the community, and make up the shortfall between earned income and what it actually costs to run the place without any guaranteed subsidies.

We are seeking people who will be enthusiastic about sharing their considerable experience to support The Witham. Typically there is a monthly Board meeting (F2F or by Zoom) lasting a couple of hours. The amount of time trustees spend in between times is a minimum of 8 days a year, but the scale of this is dependant on each individual’s skillset, willingness and availability. We especially need trustees with Marketing, Fundraising, IT/Digital skills, and are also undergoing succession planning for our Treasurer.
