Mendelssohn's beloved Octet (one of the miracles of 19th century music) was written when the composer was only sixteen, and is one of the most popular pieces of chamber music ever written. Royal Northern Sinfonia contrasts this with the rich melodies of Borodin's evocative String Quintet and the stirring brilliance of Shostakovitch's Octet.
