Welcome

Everyone is creative and here at The Witham, we believe it's a fundamental human right to experience, participate in, and be excited by great art and culture. And we're working hard to offer you just that with our latest exciting season packed with theatre, films, visual art exhibitions, workshops, music and comedy.

Our mission is to be a platform for best artistic and cultural experiences, champions of participation in the arts for all, whilst creating a community that builds relationships and nurtures progressive, dynamic projects to excite, inspire & encourage artistic exploration.

It's that time of year again when we celebrate children's literature and for 2017 we are enjoying all things to do with Fairytales, Myths and Legends. The celebration takes place from 25th July to 31st August. With your help we'll be growing a Beanstalk of stories up The Witham stairs, working with children to create a story-inspired children's menu and turning our very own wooden Caravan into a Story Stage with fancy dress clothes and props. There will also be a Spot the...challenge for the whole family to enjoy on Barnard Castle high street! Just call in The Witham to pick up your sheet and let the fun begin.

The Summer of Stories Week by Week

Tuesdays and Fridays

Every Tuesday and Friday morning during the Summer of Stories you will find our enchanting storytelling chair with it's magical creatures, nestled amongst various habitats and mysterious places. Watch out for the librarians and their fascinating stories as they pop up all over Barnard Castle. Make sure you get a photo and use #summerofstories to record your time during the celebrations!

Wednesdays

Wednesdays are dedicated to creative crafts! From making your very own moving monster, beasts and beauties, exploring illustration and collage and creating magical maps to link all of your favourite fairy-tales, these sessions are the perfect opportunity to let your arty fingertips run wild!

Thursdays

If film is your thing, then come along on to Thursday to revel in the big screen delights of some fantastical films including Alice through the Looking Glass, Moana, Cinderella and Pan.

Monday 14 - Friday 18 August

If you really want to get involved, then join a cast of budding, young musical theatre enthusiasts as you take on the challenge of producing a Jukebox Musical in a week. This is an intensive week between Monday 14 and Friday 18 August involving workshops and rehearsals, delivered by Capella Performers. Find out more here.

Exhibitions in our Visual Art Gallery

We have two beautiful exhibitions in our gallery. The first, Magic of Illustration brings together a group of children's illustrators including the likes of the talents behind Bagpus and Rupert Bear. The second, Myths, Fairytales and Legends presents a fascinating insight into the work of artists from across the region whose work is inspired by local, national, and internationally celebrated myths, legends and fairytales.
